LARRY MILLER SITTING IN FOR CHRISTOPHER VYCE.

TODAY, FEATURING THOSE LONG CUTS THAT COULD ONLY BE HEARD ON FM UNDERGROUND RADIO DURING THE SUMMER OF LOVE. MORE OR LESS...

Bob Dylan: “Visions of Johanna”
Van Morrison: “T B Sheets” (from “Blowing Your Mind”- 1st solo album)

Creedence Clearwater Revival: “Susie Q” (1st album- original unedited long version)
Rolling Stones: “Going Home” (from “Aftermath”)

Pink Floyd: “Set the Controls For The Heart Of The Sun” ( Slight oops: from “A Saucerful of Secrets”- actually the second
album, from 1968- pretty much post-Syd Barrett track.)
Jimi Hendrix: “Third Stone From The Sun” (From first album)
King Crimson: “21st Century Schizoid Man” (Another slip of the space-time continuum: this was released in 1969)

Jim and Jean: “Crucifiction” (from the album “Changes”- song written by Phil Ochs)
Tim Buckley: “Hello and Goodbye” (title track of that album.)

Paul Butterfield Blues Band: “East-West” (Raga/rock/blues fusion- 2nd album )
Blue Project: “Two Trains Running” (Featuring Danny Kalb on vocals and lead guitar)

Buffalo Springfield: “Bluebird” ( The long version; only released in the 70’s on a double “best of” vinyl album. This does not appear on any CD compilation mostly because Stills and Young hate it. I’m not all that fond of it myself.)

Hope you all enjoyed the show. See you again next Tuesday, when we’ll revisit the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco and see who played there during the Summer of Love.

Stay cool!

This season marks the 50th anniversary of the writing of Lowell, MA native Jack Kerouac's "beat" classic "On The Road", one of the books of the era which had an early influence on the '60s "counterculture" and was especially significant to Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead.

Kerouac's character Dean Moriarty was modeled after "beat" and "Merry Prankster" icon Neal Cassady, who became part of the Dead's circle with Ken Kesey's "Merry Pranksters" in the Acid Test days, and had even lived with members of the Dead including Bob Weir, who wrote two songs about him.

Longtime Grateful Dead historian, biographer, agent and publicist Dennis McNally studied Kerouac and wrote about him in his book "Desolate Angel" just prior to getting involved with the Dead, and very soon acknowledged the connections bridging the two.

Bob Weir & Ratdog played at Boarding House Park, a small outdoor venue in Lowell MA, because it's adjacent to the Boott Cotton Mills Museum where the original manuscripts of Kerouacs "On The Road" are on display through Sept. 14. http://www.ontheroadinlowell.org

The concert Sunday began with a speaking appearance by McNally and Weir, where he tells his memories of the one-of-a-kind Cassady, and how he came to write "(That's It For) The Other One" about him on the very night that he passed away.

12. Bob Weir (Grateful Dead) - Cassidy (sic) (from "Ace", 1972)
13. Bob Weir/Dennis McNally excerpt of talk about Cassady (8-12-07, Lowell, MA)

Thanks for listening,

Grateful Dead: “St. Stephen” (Live Dead)
Spikedrivers: “Often I Wonder”
The Southbound Freeway: “Crazy Shadows” (rare single on the Swan label)
MC5: “Kick Out The Jams”

(Yes, I played guitar in the Southbound Freeway in Detroit in 1966; apparently I got out just in time, before this recoding was made... For more on the Detroit rock scene from those years, go here: http://home.att.net/~s.m.geer/bands.htm)

I’ll be back on Thursday the 16th filling in for Chris, and again on Tuesday the 21st, when we’ll do more of the venues thing, featuring the Avalon Ballroom from August 1967.

Be Cool.
