Playlist for another Summer of Love Flashback by Larry Miller

...LIKE A ROLLING STONE...

The current Rolling Stone Magazine is a special issue on the Summer of Love. Included is an annotated list of “The 40 Essential albums of 1967” by Robert Christgau and David Fricke.

Today’s show is selected from that list.... (album titles in parentheses)

The Doors: “The Crystal Ship” (1st album)
Donovan: “House of Jansch” (Mellow Yellow)
Rolling Stones: “Who’s Been Sleeping Here” (Between the Buttons)
Byrds: “Thoughts and Words” (Yesterday and Today)

Jefferson Airplane: “How Do You feel?” (Surrealistic Pillow)
Country Joe and the Fish: “Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine” (Electric Music for the Mind and Body)
Grateful Dead: “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” (1st album- Pigpen on vocal and harp)

Velvet Underground: “I’m Waiting For My Man” (1st album, with banana)
Rolling Stones: “Out of Time” (from Flowers- Originally on UK Aftermath)
Moby Grape: “Someday” (1st album)
Beatles: “Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite” (Sgt. Pepper)

Pink Floyd: “Interstellar Overdrive” (Piper at the Gates of Dawn)

Hollies: “Games We Play” (Evolution)
Big Brother and the Holding Company: “Down on Me” (1st Album, on Mainstream)
Jimi Hendrix: “Manic Depression” (1st Album)
Procol Harum: “Repent Walpurgis” (Whiter Shade of Pale album)

Arlo Guthrie: “Goin’ Home” (Alice’s Restaurant)
Tim Buckley: “Hallucinations” (Goodbye and Hello)
Beach Boys: “Wild Honey” (Wild Honey)
The Kinks: “Waterloo Sunset” (Something Else)

Doors: “Moonlight Drive” (Strange Days)
Serpent Power: “Don’t Listen to Her” (Serpent Power)
Cream: “We’re Going Wrong” (Disraeli Gears)
Buffalo Springfield: “Expecting To Fly” (B.S. Again- Neil Young song)
Jefferson Airplane: “Won’t You Try/ Saturday Afternoon” (After Bathing at Baxter’s)
The Who: “Our Love Was, Is” (The Who Sell Out)
Jimi Hendrix: “Little WIng” (Axis: Bold as Love)
Love: “Alone Again, Or...” (Forever Changes)

That went well. I’ll try to get to a couple of the albums I missed next time, in two weeks. USA Today also did a similar list, with most of the same albums.

Today’s breaks music came from a homemade compilation I put together of my favorite instrumentals from the 50’s, with such stuff as Harlem Nocturne by Sam ‘The Man’ Taylor, Slow Walk by Sil Austin, Deep Feeling by Chuck Berry (on steel guitar), Night Train by Louis Prima, with Sam Butera and the Witnesses, Apache by Jorgen Ingman, Raunchy by Bil Justis, White Silver Sands by Bill Black, and Quiet Village by Martin Denny. Love that stuff...

Giveaway question and answer: What San Francisco band did Dan Hicks play in before he went solo? Answer: the Charlatans.
Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks play this Friday, July 27 at The Bull Run in Shirley, MA. Congratulations to our ticket winner!

See you in two weeks. “Don’t take the Brown Viagra...”
