Tuesday, January 20, 2009 - Eli Polonsky

(Mostly) music for this historic Inauguration Day of America's first African-American President Barack Obama!

01. The Impressions - We're A Winner

At this time, I was interrupted by MIT Facilities workers who I had called in to correct a serious problem that they had recently caused with the ventilation system that supplies air to the radio station. Needing to play a long piece of music while I spent time over in a ventilation and boiler room showing the problem to the workers, I threw on this long Grateful Dead jam from the 1969 "Live Dead" album:

02/03. Grateful Dead - St. Stephen -> The Eleven

Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart (with Warren Haynes on lead guitar/vocals and Jeff Chimenti on keyboards) as "The Dead" played at one of the Presidential Inaugural Balls! picture

The ventilation problem now (sort of) corrected and once again having some air to breathe in the studio, I continued the show as the temperature inside the radio station slowly lowered from about ninety to approximately seventy-five degrees.

04. Pacific Gas & Electric - Are You Ready
05. The Chambers Brothers - People Get Ready (request)
06. The Rascals - A Ray Of Hope
07. The Chi-Lites - (For God's Sake) Give More Power To The People
08. Sly & The Family Stone - You Can Make It If You Try
09. Aretha Frankin - When This Battle Is Over (Duane Allman, guitar)
10. James Brown - Funky President
11. Sam Cooke - A Change Is Going To Come
12. The Pointer Sisters - Yes We Can Can (live version)
13. Etta James - At Last
14. Stevie Wonder - Heaven Is Ten Zillion Light Years Away
15. The Impressions - Keep On Pushing (request)
16. Stevie Wonder - Higher Ground
17. Richie Havens - Freedom (from Woodstock)
18. Jimi Hendrix - Freedom (alternate studio version)
19. Tim Hardin - Simple Song Of Freedom
20. The Byrds - Chimes Of Freedom
21. Bob Marley & The Wailers - Sun Is Shining (request for Marley)
22. Jimi Hendrix Band Of Gypsys - Message To Love
23. Odetta and many others - This Land Is Your Land (live, from tribute to Woody Guthrie)
24. Fleetwood Mac - World In Harmony (live at Boston Tea Party)

I found the station uninhabitable when I arrived before this show. Fumes were coming through the ventilation system instead of air, and the temperature was close to ninety degrees. If I hadn't been able to get MIT Facilities workers to the station to deal with the problem (which they had actually caused sometime during the past week), I would have signed the station off the air and gone home instead of doing the show.

Unfortunately, the hour and a half that I spent before and during the beginning of the show dealing with MIT Facilities, both on the phone and in person, was at the sacrifice of any preparation time for this show. There is no support staff at this all-volunteer station to deal with any such immediate issues that may come up. The on-air DJ essentially is the whole station most of the time.

Thanks for listening and bearing with it,
Eli Polonsky

January 1, 2009 (New Year's Day Evening) Three Hour Lost & Found-like Show w/ Host Bob Dubrow

'Tis the holiday, and some WMBR jocks needed fill-ins...so I was happy to oblige and air a Lost & Found-like program from 10:00 pm - 1:00 am. The theme will be apparent to you from the playlist. It was VERY quiet, the phone didn't ring until 2 1/2 hours into the show...with a request from an enthusiastic listener for "November" from the 1993 Tom Waits album The Black Rider...unfortunately not in our record library. Were you listening?

You can access the archive of this show for two weeks in these two links (one is for the first 2 hours, the second features the third and last hour):
